1. Keto Diet Basics
The ketogenic diet (or “ ”) is a low-carbohydrate diet plan that focuses on consuming moderate amounts of healthy fats, primarily MCT oil, instead of traditional carbohydrates. Ketosis refers to the metabolic state where a person's body uses fat rather than carbs as its primary source of fuel. In order to enter ketosis, carbohydrate intake should be kept at less than 50 grams per day with most dietary fat restricted to 25–30 grams per day.
What Are the Benefits?
There are many different reasons people choose a . One of the major ones is , however, some evidence suggests that following the keto diet may improve brain function and reduce symptoms associated with epilepsy among children. A keto diet reduces the number of medications taken by diabetics, lowers blood glucose levels (and potentially insulin), increases mitochondrial biogenesis, and may help reverse diabetes complications such as neuropathy. 2. Can I Lose Weight While On a Keto Diet?
Yes! Depending on what type of meals you consume on a keto diet, you can lose between 0.75 – 2 pounds per week, even while gaining muscle mass. If you start off eating plenty of meat and high quality fats, you will begin to build muscle right away. However, if you start out just focusing on vegetables and fruit, your body will use those two foods for energy, losing lean muscle mass along with fat.
Note that you probably won't lose any significant amount of weight during the first few weeks of transitioning onto a ketogenic diet, since your body is still using stored glycogen (carbohydrates). You'll likely lose water weight initially, though. Make sure to drink enough water to avoid dehydration and keep track of how much you're drinking daily in a journal.
3. Is the Safe for Me?
Yes! The keto diet is safe for everyone regardless of age, gender, or physical activity level. In fact, it’s especially helpful for individuals who have chronic diseases such as obesity, polycystic o***y syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, or Type II Diabetes.
