💧 MOUNT AIRY WATER UPDATE + YOUR HAIR 💧

Many of you have probably noticed the recent earthy/mildew smell or taste in Mount Airy’s water due to the temporary algae bloom affecting the reservoir.🌿

The City has stated that the water is safe and non-toxic. However, when the characteristics of our water change, it’s something we pay attention to at Tonality Organic Hair Studio—especially when performing chemical services. ❤️🌿
Why?
Hair is incredibly reactive to what is deposited on it. Minerals, metals and other buildup can potentially affect how professional hair color and lightener perform. Depending on what is present on the hair, we can see things like:
✨ Uneven or unpredictable color results
✨ Dullness or faster fading
✨ Unwanted warmth or tonal changes
✨ Increased dryness or scalp sensitivity
✨ Buildup that can interfere with lightening services
And this is exactly why professional hair care is about more than simply putting color on your hair.
At Tonality, we believe in looking at the health and integrity of your hair and scalp first.
For the time being, we are being extra mindful before chemical services and may recommend a clarifying, demineralizing or chelating treatment when appropriate. For certain services, we may also recommend additional precautions based on the condition of your hair.

⚠️ If you have a color or blonding appointment coming up:
Please avoid experimenting with strong clarifying treatments at home immediately beforehand unless your stylist recommends one. Different buildup requires different treatment, and we'd rather evaluate your hair first.
If your hair has suddenly felt different, coated, dry, dull, harder to style, or your color seems to be behaving differently, tell us. Those details matter.
Our goal isn't to scare anyone about the water—it’s to stay educated, proactive and protective of the hair you're trusting us with.

We do not need any more salon suites.

Y'all complain about the current state of the hair industry, but do y'all even know what's at the root of its decline ? Capitalism.
Nobody wants to own/ run a salon anymore. Nobody wants to cultivate a space where creatives can sharpen their craft, learn from one another, and build a real community. Everybody just wants to rent out rooms, fill booths, collect rent, and call it a day.
Everybody wants their own individual brand instead of coming together to build something that could be bigger than all of us.

When you have girls coming straight out of hair school (if they even go) and rolling right into a suite, never being properly mentored, never being challenged, never learning the tricks of the trade, never developing professionalism or customer service skills, you end up with an industry full of unknowledgable and unprepared stylist .

Then you have people opening salon suites simply because they see a real estate opportunity. They have no passion for hair, no interest in educating stylists, no desire to invest in the space, the people, or the culture. They're not building salons, just avenues for supplemental income.
And that's the problem.

Everybody has become so focused on independence and entrepreneurship that we’ve neglected the systems and practices that help stylist become excellent.

The beauty industry wasn't built on isolation. It was built on apprenticeship, mentorship, collaboration, and community. As a community, understanding skills are developed not just given. Somewhere along the way, we traded all of that for independence at any cost... and I think we're seeing the consequences of that now.

This is why, I am so dedicated to education. I educate my clients and any stylists who want to learn more.
I had amazing mentors growing up in this industry and it shows in my daily works, I still have mentors now.
This industry is always growing, evolving and with new scientific information coming out, you have to stay on top of it.
Scalp care, hair care and skin care it starts from within ourselves and the salon.
If you are a stylist consistently seeking growth and learning you will never fail.
If you are a client with an understanding that growth in this industry happens with positive feedback, allowing a stylists the opportunity to learn from their mistakes, thank you for the support!
In a culture of instant gratification and lack of gratitude it is increasingly pressuring as a new stylist to perform at the level of a seasoned stylist, as today's clients expect.
