Letβs talk Grey Coverage VS Grey Blending:
grey blending and grey coverage are two completely different approaches, and clients often use the terms interchangeably.
π€ Grey Coverage
Goal: hide the grey.
Grey coverage is for the client who wants their grey/white hairs to be covered and less visible. Typically, youβre working with permanent color and enough pigment to fully or mostly camouflage the grey.
Think:
βI don't want to see my grey.β
Consistent color from root to ends
More noticeable grow-out
Regular maintenance, often around 4β6 weeks depending on the client
Can be customized warmer, cooler, darker, etc.
The trade-off is that because you're covering the grey, the natural demarcation line as it grows back can be more noticeable.
β¨ Grey Blending
Goal: work WITH the grey instead of completely hiding it.
Grey blending is about creating a softer transition between the client's natural grey and their existing color. Instead of trying to make every grey strand disappear, you're strategically incorporating it into the overall color.
Think:
βI want my grey to look intentional.β
Softer grow-out
Less obvious demarcation
Dimensional highlights/lowlights
Can brighten or deepen the overall look
Often uses techniques such as foiling, balayage, babylights, lowlights, toning/glossing
Can be a great option for someone who eventually wants to embrace their natural grey
The biggest difference:
Grey coverage = conceal the grey.
Grey blending = soften and incorporate the grey.
