What Is the "September Epidemic"?

Every September, as students return to school and families settle back into their routines, healthcare providers often see a significant increase in respiratory illnesses. This annual surge is commonly referred to as the "September Epidemic" and is largely driven by rhinovirus, the virus responsible for the majority of common colds. While rhinovirus circulates throughout the year, transmission tends to increase when children return to classrooms, sports, daycare, and other group activities where close contact is common.
