Congratulations Mr. Thomas Carey, the 2022 Juneteenth Muncie Trailblazer recipient.

His nominator wrote:
Thomas Carey has been an influential black figurehead in the Muncie community the majority of his life. He was born in Oklahoma in 1941 and experienced tons of racial issues while living in the South. He returned to Texas as a young adult to complete his barber training and has now been a Barber and Black Business Owner for over 60 years.
Mr. Carey also worked at Ball State University for 28 years and retired in 1998. While working nights at Ball State, he ran his barbershop during the day while also raising his children and grandchildren.
Carey's Barbershop is a common meeting ground for people from all walks of life. In the 1960s, he completed a sit-in at an Italian restaurant with friends in Muncie to help racially integrate the restaurant. He has been a recipient of several awards including the NAACP Lifetime Achievement award in 2019 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Business Award in 2000.
In this past, he has served on several boards and committees including the Muncie Human Rights Commission (appointed in 2003). He is also a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church on S. Hackley.
He recently survived a robbery in his business in which he fought off the assailant wielding a knife. He is a loving husband, father, and grandfather along with being a lifelong friend to majority of the Muncie community.
