Muscatine Fire and Muscatine Police will mark the 25th Anniversary of 9/11 this Friday. A wreath will be laid at 7 a.m. at the Public Safety Building, followed by the annual stair climb at MHS Stadium. All are welcome — participation does not require climbing.

A Ground Zero flag will be raised by MUSCO employees who worked at the site, followed by remarks, colors, and the bell ring at 8:46 a.m. Join us as we honor the 343 firefighters lost on 9/11.

🚨 THEY ANSWER THE CALL… BUT WHO’S CHECKING ON THEM?

A recent systematic review examining su***de risk among first responders—including 911 dispatchers—highlights numbers we cannot ignore:

📞 94% of dispatchers reported exposure to work-related trauma.

🧠 32% reported suicidal ideation.

💬 Yet only 27% of dispatchers reported feeling comfortable discussing mental health concerns.

Read those numbers again.

The person sitting beside you may be answering 911 calls, sending help, keeping responders safe, and sounding completely composed—while privately struggling.

For our 911 community, peer awareness matters.

Look for the change from their normal: withdrawal, increased irritability, exhaustion, sleep problems, increased alcohol use, hopelessness, emotional numbness, burnout, or suddenly disconnecting from coworkers.

Check on your strong friend.
Check on your quiet coworker.
Check on the dispatcher who “always handles it.”

We are first responders, too—and taking care of the people behind the headset has to become part of taking care of the public.

Notice the change. Start the conversation. Stay connected.
