Moving into cold and flu season, I’d like to give a gentle reminder that a fever in children is natural and a GOOD THING.

Yes. I said it. It’s a GOOD THING. It can be scary, for them and for their grown up’s but a fever in children (even up to 104) is generally safe and an effective way to clean up a bug.

On the other hand, if the fever lasts more than 3 days or is accompanied by a terrible bad sore throat, that can point to a bacterial infection such as strep! Definitely need to see the doc for that one. Or if the child has had a fever with an illness, seems to have gotten better and then went downhill again, maybe a secondary bacterial infection.

But if your child presents with a fever, body aches, stuffy/runny nose or cough, you might can relax. Let the fever ride.

Side effects of fevers can include restlessness, and sometimes what seems like delirium (ever heard of fever dreams? It’s a real thing) and it’s okay, just watch over them, keep them safe and as comfortable as you can.

Talk to your doctor about serious worries.

Keep in mind that acetaminophen can and will reduce your child’s most powerful ally, also known as glutathion, which is a potent and powerful tripeptide molecule produced naturally by the body's cells that acts as a primary antioxidant and detoxifying agent, so use it only when absolutely necessary. I always try to opt for NSAIDs rather than acetaminophen when I can.
