I know style isn’t the most important thing in the world. But you have to get dressed every day, so I think it’s worth asking whether fear gets a vote in what you wear.
For a long time, it got one in my closet. I loved clothes and cared about style, but I was also scared of being too colorful, too feminine, too noticeable, too much.
Then my friend Ally Van Iten did my colors, and not long after that, our family walked through one of the darkest seasons of our lives. And somehow, as life got darker, I wanted more color, not less.
I don’t think I was dressing my way out of grief. I think I was learning that beauty and joy and creativity were gifts I didn’t have to apologize for enjoying. Getting dressed became one tiny way I could refuse to let darkness have everything.
And listen: I’m still not suggesting you need a new wardrobe to become spiritually mature. 😂 But I am increasingly convinced that women don’t need to be so suspicious of beauty, femininity, creativity, or being seen.
In this week’s episode we talked about style and color, yes, but we also talked about grief, visibility, what happens when we dress for the body we actually have, and why being fully ourselves can sometimes feel surprisingly scary.
