Growing Together: 2026 Food Summit

Join Marion Institute’s Southcoast Food Policy Council on Thursday, September 24, from
6:30–8:00 p.m. for a virtual gathering of community members, farmers, fishers, food-system
partners, and local leaders working to strengthen our regional food system.

This year, we’ll get a sneak preview of preliminary findings from their Community & Agriculture Resilience Audit Tool (CARAT) assessments across six Southeastern Massachusetts counties
and highlight community-led work around Dock to School and supporting new farmers.
Together, we’ll explore how local knowledge, data, and collaboration can help build a more
resilient and connected food system.

Green Crab Fertilizer Workshop with the Maria Mitchell Association
Date: Thursday, August 6

In collaboration with the Maria Mitchell Association , please join us for this free workshop on how to help control the population of the invasive green crab. Green crabs can be turned into an environmentally friendly fertilizer for your garden. Participants should bring completely waterproof boots they are comfortable crushing dead crabs with, as well as a sealable bottle or jar to take home their fertilizer.

We will provide crabs, coolers for on-site use, vinegar, and take-home fertilizer instructions.

Food has always shaped our health — what’s new is how directly we’re starting to use it as care. Across the country, doctors are prescribing produce instead of pills, insurers are covering medically tailored meals the way they’d cover a prescription, and grocery stores are becoming partners in treatment, not just places to shop. It’s called Food is Medicine, and it’s changing what healing can look like.
