WHY DO BROWN PMU BROWS TURN GRAY? 🩶

One of the most common questions I hear is:
“My brows were BROWN. How did they become gray?”

The first thing to understand is that brown is not just one color.

In simplified color theory, we can think of brown as a balance of several color components:

🟡 Yellow brings warmth
🔴 Red brings warmth and depth
⚫ Dark/black brings depth and intensity

Together, in the right balance, we see BROWN. 🤎

But permanent makeup pigment is placed inside the skin — and that balance does not necessarily look exactly the same forever.

Over the years, pigment particles are gradually affected by the skin, immune system, UV exposure, skincare, lifestyle and other factors. Different color components may change or become less visible at different rates.

If the warmer components become less visible while more of the dark component remains, the balance changes.

🟡 + 🔴 + ⚫ = 🤎 BROWN

↓ less visible warm components over time

⚫ - less 🟡 - less 🔴 = 🩶 COOLER / GRAY

This is one reason an old warm-brown PMU can eventually appear neutral, ashy or gray.

And this is also why simply putting MORE BROWN over gray brows may be a mistake.

Remember: the old dark/cool pigment is still in the skin.
If we repeatedly add complete brown pigment over it, we are also adding more dark pigment. Instead of restoring the missing balance, we may increase the total pigment load and make the brows darker, denser and eventually even cooler.

That is why I never look only at the color written on the pigment bottle.

I look at WHAT IS ALREADY IN THE SKIN and WHAT COLOR BALANCE IS MISSING.

If there is only a light gray residual shade, sometimes the solution is to restore the missing warmth with carefully selected corrective tones.

If the brows are already very dark and saturated, adding more pigment may not be appropriate at all — removal may be the better first step.

Lower eyeliner isn’t always the best place to start.

I usually don’t recommend doing the lower lash line by itself, without balancing the rest of the eye. A strong horizontal line underneath can visually weigh the eye down, make it appear smaller, and add age as our features naturally begin to shift downward over time.

My first goal is always to visually LIFT.

I start by restoring the missing arch of the brows and, when the eye anatomy allows, creating a soft upper eyeliner with a slightly lifted outer corner. These small changes redirect the horizontal lines upward and can instantly make the eyes look more open and refreshed.

Only after the brows and upper eyeliner are completely finished do I evaluate the lower lash line. If the client’s anatomy and aging pattern allow it, we can add a very soft lower lash enhancement for balance.

Permanent makeup isn’t about adding more pigment. It’s about placing it where it works with your anatomy. 🤍

Sometimes the best brow correction is… NO MORE permanent pigment. 🤎

This client came to me wanting darker brows.

And I completely understand why. Her brows looked very light and she wanted more definition.

But here’s what I saw as a PMU artist:

She has fair skin, light hair and very light natural brow hairs. Adding another layer of permanent pigment wasn’t necessarily the best solution.

Permanent makeup is not regular makeup. Pigment remains in the skin for years, and its appearance can change as it fades.

So when a client repeatedly asks to make her PMU darker, I always ask myself:

Does she really need MORE pigment in her skin — or do we simply need to make her natural brow hairs more visible?

In this case, we chose the simplest solution.

We tinted her natural brow hairs.

That’s it. Look at the difference.

The existing shape didn’t need to become heavier. We simply brought out the brow hairs she already had, creating a darker, fuller and more defined appearance without adding another layer of PMU.

This is especially important for my clients with fair skin, blonde or gray hair and light brows.

Sometimes MORE pigment is not better.

Sometimes the most professional decision I can make as a permanent makeup artist is to tell you:

“You don’t need another PMU procedure.”

My goal isn’t to put as much pigment as possible into your skin.
My goal is to create brows that look beautiful today — and that I’ll still be happy with years from now.

2) Then during the afternoon, a total solar eclipse will sweep across Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, Spain while portions of the northern United States, Canada and other parts of the Northern Hemisphere will see a partial eclipse.

3) After dark, the show continues as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak overnight into August 13, with the New Moon providing exceptionally dark skies for what is expected to be one of the best meteor-viewing nights of the year!

This is almost my oldest client — a lovely woman who is nearly 90 years old. Her skin is actually in quite good condition, and I was able to perform a very soft powdered brow procedure for her. I truly hope we will both be happy with the healed result, and I look forward to seeing her again in four weeks for her touch-up.

There are a few professional details in this work. Some people may notice that I did not place the brows too close together in the front. This is intentional. In this area there are strong facial muscles, and when a person frowns the brows naturally move closer together. If the brows are tattooed too close, the face can look tense. That’s why I always keep a natural distance in the front.

Another important point — I never create very long brow tails. As we age, facial tissues gradually descend, and long tails can make the face look sad or heavier. I prefer to keep the tails shorter and lifted for a fresher expression.

During the touch-up we slightly adjusted the brow thickness to make the shape even more balanced.

Overall, I love this result — the brows look soft, elegant, and very natural while beautifully supporting the client’s facial features.

I always try to be honest with my clients about when permanent eyeliner is not recommended.

If the eyelid skin looks like in these photos, unfortunately this type of skin is not a good candidate for permanent eye makeup.

Main signs:
— lack of skin elasticity
— almost no fat tissue in the eyelid area
— very thin skin
— deep folds and wrinkles
— it is not possible to create proper, stable skin tension during the procedure
— reduced levels of collagen and elastin in the skin

In this situation, the risk of hitting capillaries increases because the skin is very thin and blood vessels are closer to the surface. Normally, collagen and elastin act as a kind of “protective cushion” for the skin, but when they are significantly reduced, the skin becomes much more vulnerable.

As a result:
— pigment may not deposit evenly
— the line may blur or spread
— there is a higher risk of skin trauma
— the final result may not look clean or aesthetic

For this reason, I prefer to honestly decline the procedure rather than perform work that will not produce a safe and beautiful result
