The Television Academy announced the honor today, citing his contributions to Parkinson's disease research and advocacy. Established in 2002 and given jointly with the Bob & Dolores Hope Foundation, the award recognizes someone in the television industry whose humanitarian work has had a lasting impact. Past recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Danny Thomas, George Clooney, Sean Penn, and Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen.

Fox disclosed his diagnosis in 1998 and founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000. It is now the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's research in the world.

He has won five Emmy Awards: three consecutive for Family Ties from 1986 through 1988, a fourth for Spin City in 2000, and a fifth for a guest role on Rescue Me in 2009. This year brought his 19th nomination, for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Shrinking. The ceremony airs live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on NBC and Peacock, hosted by Mariska Hargitay.
