Sometimes hairdressers become the dealers of insecurity.
They point out the problem.
They sell the solution.
Then they make sure you never feel secure without them.
That is dependency disguised as beauty.
That is not empowerment. That is peer pressure dressed up as professional advice.
Real advice should expand your choices, not pressure you into trends, ageism, or self-rejection. A hairdresserâs job is not to convince you that you are broken. It is to help you understand your options, advocate for the person in front of them, and support whatever makes you feel most like yourself.
Beauty should be something you get to enjoy, not something you are taught to need.
Hairdressing is about so much more than changing someoneâs hair.
Sometimes, it is giving someone permission to stop.
To put their feet up.
To take a breath.
To feel safe, seen, appreciated, and cared for.
As stylists, it can be easy to become focused on the haircut, the formula, the timing, the photos, and everything waiting for us next.
But this is the craft, too.
Creating an experience where someone can let go of the stress they carried through the door. Building a space where clients feel comfortable being themselves. Working somewhere that also allows the artist to slow down, connect, and remember why they chose this work in the first place.

Weâre not trying to steal stylists from salons they love. Weâre trying to build relationships with artists who care about inclusivity, individuality, texture, and helping people feel celebrated instead of corrected.
Maybe that looks like coffee.

For a long time, Iâve been asking myself a question.
What does it actually mean to help someone feel beautiful?
As hairdressers, many of us say we entered this industry because we wanted to help people love themselves. I know I did.
But somewhere along the way, I started wondering if we sometimes confuse helping people express themselves with helping people escape themselves.
Because those arenât the same thing.
When someone sits in my chair ashamed of their gray hair⌠their curls⌠their frizz⌠their age⌠or feeling like theyâre too feminine, too masculine, too q***r, or simply too differentâŚ
I donât believe those things are the problem.
I believe the shame around them is.
That doesnât mean coloring your hair is wrong.
It doesnât mean changing your appearance is wrong.
Beauty, fashion, and self-expression can be joyful, artistic, and deeply personal.
But I think itâs worth asking ourselves:
Are our choices rooted in self-expression⌠or in self-rejection?
At Scrunch, our motto has always been âLetâs celebrate you.â
Not because we believe everyone should look natural.
Not because we believe everyone should reject beauty.
But because we believe everyone deserves to make choices from a place of self-acceptance instead of shame.

What if beauty culture could feel healthier for everyone?
Not perfect.
Not performative.
Just healthier.
These conversations can bring up a lot of feelings, especially in an industry where many of us were taught there was only one way to do things.
This post isnât about saying tipping is âbadâ or that other salons are wrong.
Itâs about sharing what gratuity-free, hourly pricing has allowed us to create at Scrunch:

The beauty industry has normalized a lot of things that nobody wants to talk about.
One of them is tip culture being used as a loophole to underreport income.
At Scrunch Salon, our artists charge hourly pricing. Their rates are designed around the income they want to earn, their commission structure, their experience, and the value of their time.
No gratuity.
No guessing games.
No hidden charges.
No relying on untaxed cash to survive.
Everything goes through payroll.
Our artists are W-2 employees.
Taxes are paid legally and transparently.
And honestly, weâre proud of that.
Because taxes are part of participating in a society. They help fund schools, hospitals, roads, emergency services, snow removal, programs for families, and future generations.
Whatâs always fascinated us is how loudly people criticize others for ânot paying taxesâ while entire industries quietly normalize tax evasion culture within their own systems.
That conversation makes people uncomfortable.
Good.
Hairdressers deserve legitimate income history.
They deserve unemployment protection.
Social security contributions.
Financial transparency.
The ability to qualify for homes and loans without hiding their income structure.
