The Black hair industry brings in billions of dollars every year and it didn’t start yesterday.

It started with pioneers like Annie Turnbo Malone, who built one of the first major Black-owned hair care empires and created opportunities for thousands of Black women.
From PORO College to a global industry, her legacy is still paying dividends today.

At Glam Styles Hair Studio, I don’t just love doing hair I love the history behind it.
So many of today’s trends are rooted in deep, beautiful traditions.

Any time is the perfect time to learn, but in honor of , I wanted to share a few powerful facts about Black hair culture starting with braids.

Braids have existed for thousands of years and originated in Africa long before colonization. Across many African cultures, hairstyles weren’t just about beauty or convenience they were a form of communication. Braids could represent your tribe, age, marital status, wealth, social rank, and even your role in the community.

During slavery in the Americas, braiding traditions were preserved as a way of maintaining cultural identity. Some oral histories also share that braid patterns were used to pass along survival knowledge and routes to freedom a powerful reminder of how creativity and resilience lived even in the darkest times.

Today, braids are worn across cultures and generations and have evolved into high-fashion, protective styles, and personal statements. But their roots remain deeply connected to history, identity, and resistance.

When we wear braids, we’re not just wearing a style
we’re carrying a story. 🖤
