I learned this a couple years back in my cosmic chemistry class at UCLA and I was trying to explain it to a friend the other day. I’m sure I was not making any sense (lol) so I wanted to write it down to clarify, hope this helps! Thanks for reading! 🤓

You may have heard that the U.S. has only banned around 11 cosmetic ingredients, while Europe has banned more than 1,600. While that’s technically true, it’s also a little misleading.

The biggest difference is how each region regulates ingredients. Europe automatically bans entire categories of chemicals that are considered hazardous, even if they’ve never been used in skincare or cosmetics. Many of the substances on that list are things like industrial chemicals, pesticides, prescription drugs, and even chemotherapy medications—ingredients that were never going to be in your moisturizer in the first place.

The U.S. takes a different approach. Instead of banning broad categories, it focuses on the ingredients that are actually used in cosmetics and requires manufacturers to support their safety.

So, the large difference in the numbers doesn’t mean Europe has found 1,600 dangerous skincare ingredients that the U.S. allows. It mostly reflects two different regulatory systems, not a huge difference in the safety of the products you use.
