Let’s have a moment of reflection for how hard we as hairstylists have to work these days to attract and maintain guests. Not only do we feel pressured to produce Instagram-worthy results every time, but we will also develop crippling anxiety for fear of falling far behind unless we adapt perfect photography skills to showcase our work, constantly update our portfolios, keep up with the latest algorithms so our hard work doesn’t get lost with everyone else’s, reply to DM’s at all times of the day and night, and then be expected to produce that perfect hair and photography - all in under two hours for less than $150. And you want an appointment on a Saturday within the next two weeks. With a master stylist, preferably, of course!

IN WHAT WORLD???? It’s enough to drive us crazy.

So if you’re reading this and you’re in the market for a new stylist and are basing your selection off of a perfect Insta-folio and several of the aforementioned impossible-to-attain requirements, go easy on us and reflect on the idea that it takes so much more work to function as a hair artist in today’s culture than ever before, and that some of us are doing the best we can, considering we are constantly under much tougher scrutiny and expectations than any of us could ever have imagined before.
