The San Diego Zoo has said goodbye to one of its most cherished residents.

Her name was Gramma, a magnificent Galápagos tortoise who lived an extraordinary 141 years. To many visitors, she may have seemed like just another tortoise resting quietly in her enclosure. But those who knew her story understood they were standing in the presence of a living legend.

For nearly a century at the San Diego Zoo, Gramma watched the world change in ways few living creatures ever have. She lived through two World Wars, witnessed the terms of more than 20 U.S. Presidents, and saw humanity journey from the age of horse-drawn travel and early aviation to television, computers, smartphones, and the digital era.

Generations of families came to see her. Children who once stood in awe before her enclosure returned decades later with children and grandchildren of their own, finding Gramma still there—steady, patient, and seemingly untouched by the passage of time.

Her life was more than remarkable longevity. It was a living connection to history.

Known as the Queen of the Zoo, Gramma was far more than an animal in human care. She was a symbol of endurance, resilience, and the quiet wisdom that comes with time. Through more than a century of human triumphs, challenges, and transformation, she remained a constant presence—an ancient witness to a rapidly changing world.

Today, one of the most extraordinary chapters in the San Diego Zoo’s history has come to a close.

Rest peacefully, dear Gramma. At 141 years old, you were not simply old—you were legendary. The world feels a little less timeless without you.

Thank you for reminding us how precious our time is and how much history a single life can hold.
