Yes, those are eleven-foot bronze frogs sitting on giant spools of thread, and yes, there is a reason. 🐸

The Thread City Crossing in Willimantic, Connecticut opened in 2000. Sculptor Leo Jensen of Ivoryton designed the four frogs, one at each corner of the bridge, each perched on an oversized concrete spool. The spools are for the thread. Willimantic ran on the American Thread Company, whose red brick mills and clock tower still stand along the river, and the town was called Thread City for good reason.

The frogs are for 1754. During a bad drought and a stretch of brutal heat, the people of Windham were jolted awake in the middle of the night by an unearthly shrieking racket out in the dark. Some thought it was an attack. Some thought it was the end of the world. Men went out into the night with muskets. In the morning they found a dried-up millpond full of dead bullfrogs that had apparently fought each other over the last of the water.

The town has never once lived it down, and at some point decided to lean all the way in. There have been songs about it, epic poems about it, and an actual operetta about it. The Federal Highway Administration even gave the bridge an honorable mention for design in 2002. 🧵
