A little truth I learned from marrying a hairdresser…

Before salon life, I worked in financial services.
Spreadsheets, targets, meetings, pensions, forecasts… a world where people mostly left work at work.

Then I married a hairdresser.

And somewhere along the way, I realised something I never fully understood before…

Hairdressers give parts of themselves away every single day.
Not just physically (though trust me, the standing, the repetitive strain, the skipped lunches, and aching backs are very real).

But emotionally too.

Because behind every appointment is a person.

Someone going through heartbreak.
Someone rebuilding confidence.
Someone grieving.
Someone celebrating.

Someone who simply needs to feel like themselves again.
And somehow, hairdressers hold space for all of it.

I’ve watched my husband come home physically exhausted after giving everything to his clients all day… yet still worrying about whether someone loved their colour enough, whether a client going through a tough time is okay, or whether he managed to make someone feel more confident than when they walked in.

That part of the job? Most people never see.

Clients see the beautiful hair.
The transformation.
The smiles in the mirror.

What they don’t always see is the emotional energy, care, and heart poured into every hour behind the chair.

So this is just a little reminder from someone who’s seen the industry from the outside and now from the inside…

Be kind to your hairdresser.
Be patient.
Say thank you.

Because there’s a very good chance they’ve poured far more of themselves into your appointment than you ever realised.

Completely agree. Burnout is a real thing in our industry. Some ppl change careers and some ppl retire early. We all have to learn to pace ourselves so we don’t burn out!!

So funny I found this. I remember a time when I had goals for the salon. 2019 was the last year this occurred before everything changed. Since 2020, we’ve all been in survival mode in one way or another. All high end services have come to a halt, and we’ve switched to maintenance services only. Although our overhead has went up 30% in the last 3 years, we’ve only went up minimally and have done some creative juggling as to not inconvenience our guests. Thank you to all our clients who’ve hung in there with us these last 4 years and beyond, as we’ve weathered these storms together. I know there are days it seems our sanity is hanging on by a string, but it’s because of how hard we work to take care of you. If you’ll didn’t matter to us , we would not be stressed. We appreciate you all very much!
