You may have heard that sweating helps “detox” your body — or even that sauna sessions can sweat out microplastics.

But here’s the truth:

Sweat can contain trace amounts of certain substances, including some heavy metals and chemicals.

However, scientists are still studying how significant sweating actually is as a route of elimination.

And when it comes to microplastics? There is currently no good evidence that sauna sweating removes microplastic particles from the body.

So while we love a good sauna session, we’re leaving the “miracle detox” claims at the door.

What we do know is that sauna bathing can actually promote relaxation and has been associated with several potential cardiovascular and other health benefits.
