MELKAM GENNA (Happy Christmas!) 🇪🇹❤💛💚

Ganna/Genna is Ethiopia's Christmas festivities that take place on January 7 annually. Genna is celebrated by Ethiopian households and also members of the Rastafarian community. Genna is normally celebrated with a night long church service and fasting is also part of the festivities. A special fast is usually undertaken on the evening before Genna. On the special day, traditional Ethiopian garments are worn. At church services during Genna every member of the congregation is given a candle and walk around the church three times. In villages in Ethiopia a special game is played by men and boys called Genna. It is played with a curved stick and a wooden ball. Gift giving is a very small part of Genna, more focus is on the actual church services and celebrating the birth of Christ. Children are usually given small gifts like clothes, but they are not showered in gifts. The Rastafarian community also celebrate Gena in great style, the day is marked with a traditional Rasta gathering called a Nyabinghi. Frankincense and myrrh are a favourite incense used at celebrations, they are burned to cleanse the air and spread positive vibes. Rastas can also celebrate Genna at home with family and friends, with an Ital vegan vegetarian feast which is prepared in line with Rasta's dietary beliefs. Melkam Gena to everyone! 🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️💛💚
