Throwback to the era when hairspray required protective gear and a prayer. Somewhere between beauty ritual, sci-fi invention, and off-Broadway costume design, this “glamorous” hair spray mask walked so modern setting spray could run. The volume may have been sky-high, but so were the fumes. West Village stylists everywhere still know: beauty has always involved a little drama. 👑✨

Vintage hair - authentic elements, a series.
First stop, the 1920s. An era where women started to take control over their own appearance and cut their long hair short for themselves, not to please men. Technology became popular with electric wavers being used rather than gas burner heated tongs (which were hard to control heatwave and resulting in much burnt hair). Stars of the silent movie such as Louise Brooks, Clara Bow, Gloria Swanson and dancers like Josephine Baker were huge trend setters across the globe with their fashion sense and trendy coiffures

Wednesday wisdom via
“As early as the 15th century, different tribes used hair to show one’s social hierarchy. Members of royalty wore elaborate hairstyles as a symbol of their stature, while hair was also a symbol of fertility. If a person’s hair was thick, long, and neat, it symbolized that one was able to bear healthy children. If someone were in mourning, they would pay very little attention to their hair. With hair being an elevated part of one’s body, ancient communities believed that it helped with divine communication, which is why hair styling was entrusted to close relatives. People thought that if a strand of hair fell into the hands of an enemy, harm could come to the hair’s owner.
Styles varied dramatically across regions and tribes. For the Himba tribe of Northwestern Namibia, teenage girls wore braid strands or dreadlocked hair hanging over their faces to symbolize they’d entered puberty, while young women ready for marriage tied their dreadlocks back to reveal their faces. Married women and new mothers wore Erembe headdresses made from animal skin. The Fulani tribe’s traditional hairstyle featured long hair plaited into five long braids that either hung or looped on the sides with a coiffure in the middle, decorated with beads and cowrie shells. Young girls attached their family’s silver coins and amber onto braids as a heritage symbol passed through generations. Among the Zulu people of southern Africa, the Topknot hairstyle was worn only by members of the ruling class in early centuries, serving as a status symbol. Hair was a prominent social activity, especially among women, who had the opportunity to socialize while styling each other’s hair, a communal tradition that still exists today.“ ✨
