Perioral Dermatitis is something we’ve been seeing more and more of, lately. I tried to outline my client’s dermatitis in this picture to hopefully make it more apparent (I took this photo after I had already applied a healing balm, which eased a lot of the redness). Perioral dermatitis can sometimes present itself as acne and/or rosacea, and will appear around the mouth and along the nasolabial folds. The exact cause remains unknown, but the misuse of steroids (both topical and inhaled Rx treatments) may play a role. Fluoridated products should also be looked at, especially if just recently introduced around time of flare-up. My client wasn’t using either of these. Stress, hormones, lack of sleep, over exfoliation and the overuse of too many skincare actives could also be contributing factors, in our experience. Most times antibiotics will be prescribed to treat this rash and discontinuing the use of all corticosteroids is advised. We would also suggest being most gentle with your skin during this period of time and revising your current skincare routine, being sure to exclude anything stripping, active or exfoliating and only including the bare minimum. Moisture and nourishment. Perioral dermatitis can be a chronic condition and often requires long/term treatment — for this reason, it is important to identify personal triggers, early on.
