We promised at the very beginning that we will never refine our Shea butter; it’ll arrive at your doorstep just as it has been used in Africa for centuries!! And we’ll stick with it!

Raw Shea butter has minor natural photoprotective properties, but it’s important to be clear: that protection is not strong or consistent enough to replace a properly tested broad-spectrum sunscreen.

So why reach for Shea butter in summer?

Because summer skin still needs moisture and barrier support. Sun, heat, air conditioning, chlorine, salt water, and frequent showers can all leave skin feeling dry or tight. Shea butter helps nourish and soften the skin while helping reduce moisture loss. ♥️

We don’t think the world needs more of it.
What is rare is genuinely handcrafted Shea butter, made by experienced women’s cooperatives using traditional methods.
The women actually have automated kneading machines, but they choose not to use them. They know the slower process creates a richer, higher-quality butter while preserving its naturally occurring beneficial compounds. It also keeps more women employed and protects a tradition that has been passed down for generations.

We respect that decision.

Suzy checks every batch by hand, choosing only good-quality nuts and explaining why the leaves packed with them are the natural, eco-friendly way to keep insects away, so that no chemicals are needed.

Then she lifts a huge bucket of nuts onto her head like it’s nothing and we walk to grab some Pitu, a local drink, and wait for other women to arrive after work. Our small cooperative turns into a warm village hub where women talk, laugh and support each other. I absolutely love this.

Why Does Shea Butter Get Grainy?

Raw Shea butter is made up of several different fatty acids and each one has its own melting point. When the butter warms up (a hot car, a steamy bathroom, direct sunlight) and then cools back down unevenly, those fats re-solidify at different speeds instead of setting together as one smooth mass. The result is a grainy mess.

This is purely physical, not chemical. Graininess doesn’t mean your Shea butter has gone bad, spoiled, or lost any of its benefits, it’s a textural shift, not a quality problem.

Here’s the part most people don’t realize: this only happens with real raw Shea butter.
Refined butter is processed specifically to stay smooth and “shelf-stable” no matter the temperature swings. That consistency comes at a cost, refining strips out much of the natural vitamin content and scent that make Shea butter worth using in the first place.

We’ve never refined, bleached, or added fillers to ours, and we never will. It’s harvested and hand-processed exactly the way it’s been done for centuries by the women of our cooperative in Ghana, nothing added, nothing stripped away. So yes, it might go grainy sometimes. That’s the trade-off for keeping it real.

Is Grainy Shea Butter Still Safe to Use?

Yes. Grainy Shea butter is just as effective on skin and hair as smooth Shea butter, the fatty acid profile hasn’t changed, only how it’s arranged. You can use it exactly as you normally would, graininess and all. The only reason to fix it is for the feel: a lot of people simply prefer a silky scoop over a crumbly one.

Pour the wine, gather your friends and grab a stick blender. That’s genuinely all you need.

Our favorite method- raw Shea butter goes straight into the bowl, firm from the pouch, we don’t like complicated steps. Just blend until it’s whipped and light.
Then comes the Baobab oil, add as much or as little as you like, blend again, and watch the texture go from great to unreasonably silky. The more you add the softer your body butter will be. My average is about one third of the shea butter, more during winter a bit less during the summer.

What’s happening to your skin while you’re having fun:

Raw Shea butter: vitamins A, E and F, fatty acids that support collagen, antioxidants that protect against sun and pollution damage every single day. It is deeply softening, works in summer heat and winter wind alike.

Cold-pressed Baobab oil: omegas 3, 6 and 9, vitamin C that boosts collagen production, anti-inflammatory linoleic acid that calms redness and irritation. It’s what gives the butter that final silky finish your skin actually absorbs.

Together they’re just really, really good for your skin.

How to make it:

- raw Shea butter, room temperature
- cold-pressed Baobab oil (optional but you’ll want it)
- stick blender
- bowl, friends for vibes and maybe a wine 🍷

Whip the Shea butter until fluffy. Drizzle in Baobab oil, blend again. Done. Store in a jar at room temperature.
