The Newburgh Pottery

Every “Raku” Workshop starts with some “Horse Hair Raku” while the other kilns heat up -

Traditionally horse hair, but you can play with any type of hair, fur, wool, or feathers - the pot is pulled hot from the kiln and they’re laid directly onto the unglazed surface - The hair instantly singes and carbonizes, leaving fine black trailing lines.

Origins of this technique are not officially known, but many credit Native American Pueblo Potters.

Awesome group last Saturday shown here - some first timers with us and some repeats, venturing from Poughkeepsie, Sugarloaf, and the City - thanks for making the trip all, great firing with You!

Laying out the last of this seasons clay digs before it gets too cold -

After being dug it was dried, slaked down, sieved twice, soured, sieved a 3rd time, and then left alone to settle-

Now the pure liquid clay is getting poured into these thick plaster slabs within stackable wooden frames, lined with bed sheets to make it easy and clean getting the clay out later - screens/sheets on top of each box to keep bugs, leaves, pollen and such out.

This is the last step of the process - The clay will dry for a few weeks, and then get wedged up and aged indoors through the winter, to be used next spring.

Starting on 9/25, Clay Club will be meeting the last Friday of every month!

Open to all potters from anywhere, not just our members and students - Especially those of You working solo out of your own spaces!

This idea has potential for so many things- Right now We’re thinking just a Free, Pot Luck Style, Casual Clay Hang - Maybe an activity or challenge now and then, maybe we’ll take some trips to some cool showcases or museums one day, maybe we’ll get some guest lectures or round table discussions going in the future … We’re just gonna “throw” it out there and see what evolves.

This month we’ll be making bowls, wheel thrown and hand built, to donate to Common Ground Farm Soup4Greens event in November - A noble local annual fundraiser - all materials provided!

Level 3 Wheel dives into things like Lids, Double Walled Vessels, Stacked Forms and Altered Forms - All super approachable and fun stuff when you have a good foundation - some experienced required!
