Today in Black History — July 30

1866 — The New Orleans Massacre occurred.
Black citizens and white supporters gathered peacefully to advocate for voting rights and equal citizenship during Reconstruction. Police officers, former Confederate soldiers, and a white mob attacked them. Dozens of Black people were killed and many more were wounded. The violence helped build support for stronger federal Reconstruction laws and protections for formerly enslaved people.

1936 — Blues legend Buddy Guy was born.
Born in Lettsworth, Louisiana, Guy became one of the most influential electric blues guitarists in history. His music helped shape Chicago blues and influenced generations of rock and blues musicians.

1961 — Actor Laurence Fishburne was born.
Fishburne built a distinguished career on stage and screen, portraying powerful and complex Black characters and becoming one of Hollywood’s most respected actors.

1968 — Congressman Charles Diggs Jr. honored Black congressional history.
Diggs spoke on the floor of the U.S. House to commemorate approximately 100 years of Black Americans serving in Congress and to preserve their contributions in the official record.

July 30 reminds us that Black history contains painful struggles for citizenship, but also extraordinary achievement in government, music, and the arts. ✊🏾💙
