One of the biggest myths in the loc community is that washing your locs too often will ruin them. In reality, a clean scalp is one of the foundations of healthy locs.

Your scalp naturally produces oil, sweat, and skin cells. Product buildup, dirt, and environmental debris can also accumulate over time. When the scalp isn’t cleansed regularly, buildup can contribute to itching, flaking, odor, irritation, and an unhealthy scalp environment.

Here’s what many locticians recommend:

✨ Newer locs may need a gentler washing schedule depending on their stage and your loctician’s guidance. Starter locs are still forming and can unravel more easily.

✨ Mature locs can typically handle regular washing without issue. Water actually helps locs tighten and mature over time.

✨ If you work out frequently, sweat heavily, work outdoors, or have an active lifestyle, you may benefit from washing more often than someone who doesn’t.

✨ A clean scalp is more important than trying to “hold onto” a style for as long as possible.

✨ Heavy oils and excessive products do not make locs healthier. In many cases, they create buildup that gets trapped inside the loc and becomes difficult to remove.

✨ Drying your locs thoroughly after washing is just as important as washing them. Trapped moisture can lead to odor, mildew, and scalp issues.
