It’s not an old wives’ tale—hair loss and thinning are affected by genetics, though not in the mythic way many believe. If your maternal grandfather is bald, for example, it does not automatically mean you will also experience hair loss. Hair loss and thinning in both men and women can be inherited from either parent. Inherited traits from both or either sides of your family can make you more vulnerable to male or female pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia). Hair thinning happens naturally as you age, but possessing these genes means you have a greater chance of experiencing more substantial, earlier-onset thinning.

HOW DOES HEREDITARY HAIR LOSS AFFECT MEN?
Genetics is one of the leading causes of hair loss in men. One study found that 79% of male pattern baldness is related to inherited genes—many of which dictate sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a testosterone-produced hormone.

DHT sensitivity leads to weakened hair follicles, causing strands to become shorter and thinner. This will trigger thinning around the crown and men will see more of a pronounced M-shaped hairline developing, as well as a lighter pigment. You won’t lose the hair around the back and sides of your head, though.

This sensitivity to DHT and the beginning of hair thinning can start as soon as you hit puberty. It has been found that 20% of men experience substantial thinning by the age of 20, and this percentage will increase with age. Of course, there are other causes of hair loss and thinning for both sexes, but for men, genetics do play a critical role.

HOW DOES HEREDITARY HAIR LOSS AFFECT WOMEN?
Even though men often experience hair loss at a far younger age, female pattern baldness due to genetics can occur as women become older. Hair thinning can begin as puberty ends, but this is unlikely.

As is the case for men, genes coming from either parent can result in DHT sensitivity, but for women, estrogen in the body will effectively counter this until menopause, when estrogen levels drop. At this point, sensitivity to DHT becomes more apparent. Unlike men, hair thinning will not show on the hairline or crown, but within hair parting.
