Laozi wrote that 2,500 years ago, and I keep thinking about it in the lab.
Most creams need an emulsifier to hold oil and water together. It's the standard solution. But emulsifiers work by breaking down the boundary between oil and water—and that's the same kind of boundary your skin barrier is built from.
So I don't build with them. I build with phospholipids, the same molecules your own cell membranes are made of, arranged in layers that mirror the structure already there.
The point was never to take something out. The point was to make room for your skin to do its own work.
We shape the walls. Your barrier is the space inside.
When it comes to the skin barrier, what we leave out can matter just as much as what we put in. 🌿
Instead of emulsifiers, IOKA uses phospholipid-based delivery—a system designed to work more closely with the skin’s own lipid structure.
Because healthy skin doesn’t need more complexity. It needs thoughtful formulation.
