Marilyn Monroe | Betty Grable | Lauren Bacall in “How to Marry a Millionaire.” William Travilla glamorously styled Monroe in a one-piece retro swimsuit with sparkling jewelled accents on the design and at the plunge v-neck which is then stylishly accentuated as a part of a jewelled swimsuit accessorised with a diamond armlet - and matching earrings. We see a regal purple evening gown with a fitted strapless bodice and eye catching shimmering cross-cross strap wrapped around her fine waist, on what Clark Gable called, “her magnificent torso.” The design is finished off with a mini train of fabric giving the garment - an air of dignified royalty and gravitas. Bacall wears a 1950s style dress with sheer top, light floral patterns, full skirt, and a parasol. On working with Monroe Bacall would note that, “She had no meanness. She was not bitchy.” Providing her insight into what lay behind Monroe’s seemingly and often varnished exterior. When reading her personal writings, reflections, poetic musings, and sometimes philosophical considerations - immediately we meet not a flailing or superficial mind, but what I certainly find to be - an intense thinker. Extremely penetrating in areas of self-critique, and a remarkably vivid inner life. We are fortunate to have her collected writings - written in her own hand to analyse. For instance, on pages she has made exhaustive corrections that are suggestive of a person wrestling with the act of her communication, and consequently her ideas through consistency and consideration. Other pages contrast in that there are hardly any corrections - with a clear streamline of thought. Almost clinical in tone. In both cases it highlights a person who valued expression in language with active sustained thought. She used literary and rhetorical devices in her poetry such as a polyptoton: ‘𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶.’ Polyptoton in literature is a repeated word used in its different grammatical forms in close succession. Her brilliant use here is ‘leaves leave you.’ Shakespeare’s use of polyptoton in Richard III: ‘Grace me no grace.’ Beautiful she was; and extremely intelligent.
