These signs carry only what’s necessary - hours, services, a phone number, a name painted on glass so that anyone passing can find their way in. I have spent years driving the long streets of this city, watching the neighborhood change through its grocery stores, its hair salons, its clothing shops - the way a Oaxacan market gives way to a Vietnamese bánh mì counter gives way to a Salvadoran pupusería, each storefront a corridor marker, each hand-lettered sign a declaration of who this block belongs to. LA does not consolidate; it pockets. And while the city has been catastrophically indifferent to its own architectural history - the Art Deco theaters, the Brutalist civic monuments, the Googie diners, gone or going - this vernacular signage persists, self-renewing, unkillable, each neighborhood finding its own colors and confidence in direct conversation with the community it serves. The barber pole is the oldest logo in America, and these facades belong to that same lineage - typography chosen because it reads from a moving car, color chosen because it speaks directly to the people in front of it. I put people in front of these buildings to celebrate something timeless about this city, a visual language so specific to its place and its people that it could only have come from here, and could never be replicated anywhere else. For Sasha’s updo I used dream coat extra strength, Xtra large Mouse, and style on steroids. To give her updo shape I used the 1.5 barrel from
