Happy 250 years of skin care too! Ever wonder what an average American woman’s skin care looked like in 1776? 🇺🇸✨
It definitely wasn’t a modern 10-step routine. For most women, skin care was simple, practical, and homemade.
In the colonies, women commonly washed with plain water, linen cloths, and sometimes homemade soap made from lye and animal fat. Since soap could be harsh and drying, many relied on gentle household ingredients like milk, buttermilk, oatmeal, bran, rosewater, or diluted vinegar to freshen or soften the skin.
Moisturizing was all about what was available. Chapped hands and dry skin were often treated with lard, tallow, beeswax salves, olive oil, almond oil, or simple cold cream. These were especially useful for women doing cooking, sewing, laundering, gardening, and other hard daily work.
Sun protection came from clothing, not sunscreen. Women used caps, bonnets, kerchiefs, long sleeves, aprons, gloves, and shade to protect their skin.
Wealthier women might have used rosewater, rice powder, rouge, perfumed waters, or imported creams, but the average woman’s routine was more about cleanliness, comfort, healing, and protection than glamour.
A typical 1776 routine might have been:
Wash face and hands with water and a cloth
Use mild soap only when needed
Apply beeswax, lard, or tallow salve to dry hands
Use buttermilk, oatmeal, or rosewater for softening
Wear a bonnet or cap outdoors
Treat cuts, burns, and cracked skin with herbal salves
So while the products were very different, the goals were familiar: cleanse, soften, protect, and soothe.
Simple. Resourceful. Homemade. That was everyday skin care in 1776.

Oh my! Who knew? This is scary! Pet owners beware Shared by Cindy Paxton
Blue-green algae is one of the most dangerous warm-weather risks many dog owners still don’t know enough about. ⚠️🐶
This toxic bacteria can grow in:
• ponds
• lakes
• slow-moving water
• standing water
It often appears as:
• green slime
• paint-like scum
• green surface streaks
• pea soup-looking water
Even small amounts can be deadly if ingested.
Dogs may be exposed by:
• drinking contaminated water
• swimming
• licking fur afterward
Symptoms can appear very quickly and may include:
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• weakness
• drooling
• seizures
• difficulty breathing
• collapse
If exposure is suspected, immediate veterinary care is critical.
When in doubt, it’s safest to keep dogs away from suspicious water entirely.
