Why do clippers ask that their clients thoroughly clean/ bathe their horse before clipping???

The answer is simple!!

The cleaner the horse, the cleaner the clip!!

The dirt and oils that are in a dirty coat hinder the blades ability to actually get through the hair! This will cause more clip lines and less of a clean finish. If the coat is clean the blades can easily glide through the hair and allow for a seamless, beautiful clip. Additionally if you clip on clean coats your blades will last longer as dirt dulls the blades.

In the summers or for those in year long warm climates I always recommend my clients bathe their horses prior to me clipping. In this bath it’s important to really scrub where horses accumulate the most dirt… I always find this to be on their legs, and rump. Right before the clip I reccomend a good groom with a nice curry session (if your horse allows lol) and finish off with an oil based coat spray like show sheen so my blades can glide through the coat with ease!

What about in the winter??

Lots of people ask me what the best thing to do to get their horse nice and clean before a clip in the colder months when bathing is not an option. Here are some of my favorites!

1) a thorough groom with lots of currying… the more thorough grooms before the appt the better. Finishing off the groom with some coat spray
2) rinse the mud and gunk off their legs if possible
3) hot toweling their coat to remove excess dirt and debris. You can also add some coat oil to this process! Read more about hot toweling at the link below!!

Trace clip with half face .. for this clip we decided to clip more of her neck than a traditional trace clip as this girl gets sweatiest on her neck !

First trace clip of the season on the wonderful Cannamabee aka Mabee. He was an absolute gentleman during the entire clip. What a beautiful shiny healthy coat! Is your horse getting hairy/sweaty ? Message me!

So fun to clip two horses on opposite sides of the spectrum in one day! One being a really fuzzy pony and the other being a 17+ hh warmblood with a very thin coat. Both were wonderful for their clip and will were feeling nice and cool as Saturdays heat wave came in!

Of course I forgot to get an after picture but another day, another clip! Now Karakter here is an amazing equitation horse and a barn favorite. Isn’t he just absolutely stunning!!! He may be amazing In the show ring but this horse is not a fan of the clippers. That is okay! With patience, kindness, some treats and a few sessions I was able to get this guy show ready. Here at clipping creations I understand that not all horses will stand perfectly for the clippers, some have difficulties in specific areas and for some horses the process is very stressful. I am always willing to work with a horse that’s not the best for clipping, nervous or new to it even if it means coming back for a few sessions to complete the clip or taking breaks throughout the clip. This way I can ensure that each horse has the most positive experience possible! This guy has become leaps and bounds better with the clipping process and as always I am happy to be part of the process in any way!
