NORTHBOUND NOVI RD., 8 MILE RD. TO 9 MILE RD., IN NORTHVILLE AND NOVI, EXPECTED TO CLOSE MARCH 30 FOR CONTINUED CONSTRUCTION
The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC), in partnership with the cities of Novi and Northville, expects to close northbound Novi Road, from 8 Mile Road to 9 Mile Road, in the two communities starting Monday, March 30, for the second phase of a major resurfacing project.
The northbound traffic detour will be 8 Mile Road to Beck Road to 10 Mile Road, back to Novi Road. During this phase, the road will remain open to southbound traffic.
The project will be completed in late summer.
The approximately $6.9 million project will be paid for mostly with federal funds, along with matching dollars from RCOC, Novi, Northville and Oakland County general government (through the Tri-Party Program).
The project includes:
• Reconstructing the curve between 8 Mile Road and Allen Road/the Rouge River (completed in 2025).
• Pavement milling (grinding off old pavement) and repaving with two layers of asphalt.
• Adding a continuous center left-turn lane throughout this section of Novi Road.
• Adding two northbound lanes and one southbound lane from the Rouge River/Allen Drive to 9 Mile Road.
• Placing curb and gutter where appropriate within the project.
• Installing storm sewers to improve drainage.
• Reconstructing side-street and driveway approaches throughout the project.
• Bridge maintenance.
• Improving pedestrian crosswalks to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
• Installing High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) beacons for pedestrians just north of Galway Street.
• Upgrading traffic signs and pavement markings.
The contractor for the project is Dan’s Excavating of Shelby Township. This section of Novi Road carries approximately 13,700 vehicles daily.

Novi Road, 8 Mile Road to 9 Mile Road | Road Commission for Oakland County The 2025-26 project includes resurfacing and adding a continuous center left-turn lane on Novi Road from 8 Mile Road to 9 Mile Road. In 2025, the curve between 8 Mile Road and Allen Drive will be reconstructed to improve safety, with the remaining project being completed in 2026.

🌱 Introducing Rooted in Northville 🌿 Rooted in Northville is a new public outreach campaign led by the Sustainability Team and River Task Force, and endorsed by the Mayor, to help residents make small, everyday choices in their yards and landscapes that support birds, butterflies, pollinators, and a healthier river habitat.

The campaign shares practical, science-based guidance on how landscaping decisions, from planting native plants to reducing pesticide use, can help protect local wildlife, improve water quality, and strengthen Northville’s natural environment.

Through City News, social media, and the website, residents will find helpful tips and resources on topics such as helping birds thrive, saving water, understanding the value of fallen leaves, choosing native plants, and creating more river-friendly landscapes.

The best part? You don’t need a large yard or a major project to make a difference. Small changes can have a big impact across our community.
