Game 6 โ€“ 2011 World Series: The Eternal Night of David Freese

It was October 27, 2011, and the Texas Rangers were just one strike โ€” twice โ€” away from reaching ultimate glory: their first World Series title. But that night, at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, baseball had other plans.

From the start, the game was a roller coaster. The Rangers and the Cardinals traded blows like two giants determined not to give in. The score swung constantly, but by the ninth inning, Texas was up 7โ€“5. They needed only three outs.

And thatโ€™s when David Freese appeared.

With two outs and two strikes, Freese hit a triple to right field, driving in the two runs that tied the game. The stadium exploded. The game was headed to extra innings, and the drama was only beginning.

In the tenth, Josh Hamilton, Texasโ€™ power hitter, seemed to seal the deal with a two-run home run. Rangers were ahead again, now 9โ€“7. Once more, three outs away from history.

But the Cardinals refused to die. Again, with two outs and two strikes, Lance Berkman hit a single that tied the game 9โ€“9.

Then came the eleventh inning.

And Freese stepped up to the plate once more. With a full count, he swungโ€ฆ and the ball flew over center field. Home run. Game over. Cardinals won 10โ€“9. The stadium shook.

David Freese, the unexpected hero, became a legend. And that game, which seemed impossible, was immortalized as one of the greatest ever played. 12/21/2025
