I’m incredibly honored to be featured in the Fall Harvest 2026 issue of Edible East Bay magazine

“Cooking Up a Maker Community” shares my journey from growing up in Alaska and studying culinary arts to working in Bay Area kitchens, learning traditional food preparation, and founding Summer Solace Tallow in Oakland in 2014.

The story beautifully captures the relationships at the heart of my work: our regional ranchers, farmers, beekeepers, seaweed harvesters, craftspeople, farmers’ market neighbors, and customers. For over 12 years, I have worked to honor the whole animal, revive the traditional use of tallow, and create handcrafted skincare, soaps, and candles using ingredients sourced primarily within 150 miles of our Oakland studio.

When selling sheepskins in person, folks always ask, “What do you do with this?”

I enthusiastically reply that you can use our holistic, regional, Climate Beneficial™ sheep and lambskins in so many ways. Place one on an ottoman or chair, especially an office chair, to ground yourself while working or taking a Zoom call. Lay one across the top of your bed or beside it, where you can stand barefoot on pure, clean wool.

Take your sheepskin camping, sit on it while dining al fresco, or place it in your car. Sheepskins also make wonderful, traditional baby gifts. I’ve had many families purchase them to welcome a new baby, and Waldorf families especially love them.

Folks also ask, “How do I clean it?” Wool is naturally self-cleaning and liquid-resistant. If coffee, tea, or wine spills on it, gently blot the area with a towel. Organic cotton is preferred. Then, allow it to air-dry. For a deeper refresh, place the sheepskin in the sun.

You can also use a dog brush with long prongs to gently brush your sheepskin, although doing so may loosen some of the tight, natural tendrils in the wool. We do not recommend putting it in the washing machine, as this may damage the leather and cause the hide to crack.

Make your sheepskin your own. Meditate on it, let your children enjoy it, and welcome it into your daily life. It is a beautiful heirloom piece to enjoy for years to come! 🐑

Since 2015, I’ve been a producer member of Fibershed Northern California. I took it upon myself to curate Climate Beneficial™ wool goods and naturally tanned sheepskins from our cohort and share them with my community at the Oakland and Berkeley farmers markets. I work exclusively with Jacobs’s Sheep, Wensleydale, Wensleydale x Leicester Long-wool, and Corriedale breeds raised here in Northern California.

Over the years, it has been such a delight to have people experience the holistic quality of our regional sheepskins. So many have found their way into homes, been given as meaningful gifts, and welcomed babies into the world.

It has been an incredible 11 years as a Fibershed producer member, and I look forward to continuing to educate others and share our slow textile movement and Climate Beneficial™ wool.
