From a somatic perspective, trauma healing happens as we learn to reconnect with our bodies, honour its sensations, and acknowledge and experience the raw emotions that come up without judgment and fear. ⁣ ⁣ The language of our body becomes our guide, and the wisdom of our physical sensations hold the keys to our transformation.⁣ ⁣ Why do we prioritize sensation over story in somatic therapy? ⁣ ⁣ Because our bodies are repositories of all our lived experiences - every joy, every sorrow, every trauma and wound we’ve experienced. They carry the imprints of our past, manifesting as tension, discomfort, or numbness, communicating truths that words alone can’t. ⁣ Trauma is mostly stored in our implicit memory that can be accessed primarily through the body. ⁣ By tuning into our bodily sensations, we bypass the limitations of language and get in touch with the core of our wounds. ⁣ ⁣ But what about the stories our mind is telling? Aren’t they crucial to understanding our experiences? ⁣ Aristotle said, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” When we work with our stories cognitively, we re-educate our mind, but this isn’t enough to heal trauma. We need to also re-educate our body and emotional self. ⁣ Narratives can offer a framework for making sense of our lives, but they can also trap us in loops of rumination that reinforce patterns keeping us stuck in the past. By learning to separate our feelings and body experiences from these stories, we gain agency over our narratives and learn to trust the intelligence of our bodies. ⁣ ⁣ The invitation is to feel the feeling in the body but not ride the story in the mind. Don’t invali-date, reject or exile the story, but don’t treat it as the ultimate truth either. ⁣ ⁣ It’s simple, yet not easy – which is why it takes practice. ⁣ Where are you on this journey of reconnecting with your body? 💜🦋
