6 years ago today I surrendered the illusion of control I thought I had over drugs and alcohol. At the time I was 150 pounds, depressed, suicidal, and an anxious self medicating neurotic mess. I wasn’t much of a father, brother, son, employer, or friend. I had no gratitude for anything only resentment and anger. In my eyes everything was someone or something else’s fault.

Today I’m filled with gratitude. Grateful to be a father, a brother, a son, a friend. To actually care for and allow myself to be cared for. Sometimes that’s the hardest thing for me. Allowing others to care about me. When I didn’t value myself for so long I wouldn’t dare let others in. I rarely write anything of substance on here because it’s not in my nature to show outward emotion. I’m writing today because I feel it’s my duty to give back what was given to me. I do this so that someone reading this that feels lost and alone in a crowd reaches out.
