๐ŸŽพ On this day in 1969, Mexico lost its greatest tennis champion โ€” and most of the world has forgotten his name.

Meet Rafael "El Pelรณn" Osuna. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ

He remains the ONLY Mexican tennis player to ever reach World No. 1 โ€” a feat he achieved in 1963 that no Mexican has matched in over 60 years.

That same year, he won the U.S. Championships (today's US Open), defeating Frank Froehling 7โ€“5, 6โ€“4, 6โ€“2 โ€” to this day the only Grand Slam singles title ever won by a Mexican.

But his greatness ran deeper:
๐Ÿ† Wimbledon doubles champion in 1960 (with Dennis Ralston) and 1963 (with Antonio Palafox)
๐Ÿ† U.S. doubles champion in 1962
๐Ÿ† Led Mexico to its only Davis Cup Final ever, in 1962 โ€” the first final reached by ANY Latin American nation

His last triumph was almost cinematic. Just two weeks before his death, he nearly single-handedly defeated mighty Australia in the Davis Cup โ€” winning both his singles matches AND the doubles โ€” toppling a nation that had lifted the Cup 17 times.

Then, on June 4, 1969, tragedy struck. At just 30 years old, Rafael Osuna was one of 79 people killed when Mexicana Flight 704 crashed into the Cerro del Fraile near Monterrey.

A decade later, in 1979, he became the only Mexican ever inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Elegant. Fearless. A panther on the court, a gentleman off it.

More than half a century later, Rafael "El Pelรณn" Osuna is still the greatest tennis player Mexico has ever produced. ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ

Today, we remember him. ๐Ÿ™
