Frank Green bought an entire railroad depot in 1972, set it on a flatbed truck, and hauled it to the parking lot of his steakhouse in Odessa.
The depot had been built in Pecos in 1886 by the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway, back when the railroad was the reason a West Texas town existed at all. It worked as a train station for eighty six years. When it closed, Green bought the whole building.
His steakhouse had opened in 1963 as Jay's Barn Door. Green bought that too and shortened the name to the Barn Door. The depot went in beside it as a saloon, and that is what it has been ever since.
Owners have changed hands since. Nancy and Bill Massey took it over in 1994, and Roy and Tami Gillean have it now. The depot has not moved again. A building that spent eighty six years watching trains come and go in Pecos has spent the last fifty four listening to people order steak in Odessa.
Stay fresh and cool even in the heat.
