Allantoin is a skin-soothing ingredient best known for helping calm irritation and support the skin’s natural protective barrier

ACNE EDUCATION | Non-Inflammatory Acne

Non-inflammatory acne is primarily made up of comedones, pores that have become clogged with a mixture of sebum (oil) and dead skin cells

There are two types:

• Closed comedones (whiteheads): The pore is clogged and remains closed at the surface, creating a small, flesh-colored or white bump

• Open comedones (blackheads): The pore remains open, allowing the contents to come into contact with air. The dark appearance is caused by oxidation, not dirt

Because these lesions aren’t driven by the same inflammatory response as papules or pustules, they typically aren’t red, swollen, or painful

Comedones can also be easy to mistake for other types of skin texture, which is why identifying what you’re actually treating matters

Aggressive squeezing or over-exfoliating can irritate the surrounding skin and contribute to more inflammation

The goal isn’t just to remove the clog, it’s to address what’s contributing to the clog in the first place
