Well, it's been awhile since I've posted something educational! There's been a recent study, again, about Gel Lamps that has raised some concerns from consumers. Here are my thoughts about the problems with this recent study.

!. They used cells under a direct exposure to a gel lamp. One would think the skin is different than just using the cells?
2. They exposed the cells to 20 mins exposure. The most exposure to the gel lamp, during a service at a nail salon, should be just a little over 2 mins. The time is determined by the manufacturer of the lamp and the polish, but none that I know of require that long of exposure by the lamp to cure the gel polish.
3. Then they did this time of exposure once a week for three weeks. This is not standard practice. Normal exposure would be once every two to three weeks. Some may want to do once a week, but I discourage this as it's not necessary.
4. It has been proven that the skin on the hands and the fingernails have a built in resistance to UV rays. Ever notice how it takes longer for you to tan your hands or someone's face is one color and the hands are still their natural color? It's the equivalent of a built in natural sunscreen.
5. The other thing this study failed to mention is that professional quality gel lamps DO NOT contain the UV B ray, which is the ray that causes cancer. You get more exposure from the sun taking a 20 min walk than you do from a gel lamp.
6. They did not inquire or consult with anyone within in the nail industry.

So, IMO the ones who did this study did not compare apples to apples. They did not do the same procedures that are done in reputable nail salons who follow manufacturing guidelines who have done the R&D required ensure consumer's safety. And to this date the FDA has had no reports of any cancer related illness due to someone getting exposure from gel lamps. Gel and gel polish has been around for at least 10 yrs now, so if there was a cancer risk with gel manicures one would think there would be reports of getting cancer from the lamps if this really was an issue.

Recommendation - if you are still unsure of the safety of nail lamps then use a sunscreen 20 mins prior to getting a gel manicure. I've heard of some nail salons that offer that to their customers, but if it's not applied 20 mins prior to exposure that serves no purpose!

First of all this is not a manicure, it's a polish change. Manicure includes removing nail polish filing and shaping nails, pushing back and removing cuticle from nail plate, exfoliating, paraffin dip and hand/arm massage. Second, without base or topcoat this will not last but a day or two, mine would last at least 5-7 days, gel polish 10-14 Third it doesn't wrap the ends of the nail with polish so that means it won't last long due to that either. Fourth, I saw it left a pretty good amount of gap in the back of the nail and on the side, so that is not a perfect polish job.

Due to a little surgery on my big toe, will be closed for a few days. Appreciate all my clients checking up on me, offering assistance and letting me borrow some medical equipment to help me get around better. But, don't ya think I'm rocking that neon pink polish color on my toes??? Sure is interesting how some medical doctors and facilities make you take off everything off your nails and some don't care?? Doing great, no pain this a.m. can't put full weight on the big toe side, but can get around without any assistance and hope to not need any pain meds today. Swelling is down, too!! Due to constant rudeness and verbal abuse via reviews on my Google listing from walkins, I am going By Appointment ONLY from now on. I am tired of people getting mad at me and taking it out on my rating on my Google listing by lying in their reviews about what transpired, because they didn't listen to what I said, didn't get what they wanted, when they wanted, etc since they walk in and just expect me to stop what I'm doing with a client and take care of them. Doesn't work that way. Every single bad review I've gotten has been from people walking in, expecting me to drop what I'm doing and take care of them, not listening to what I'm telling them or just down right lying about what transpired when they came in. Any of my regular clients know that I am not rude to people and I usually go out of my way to accommodate my clients! Enough is enough. From now on if anyone walks in they will be politely told that I work By Appointment Only and a sign will be posted stating as such on the door. I'm tired of people with an entitled attitude taking out their frustrations on me and their negative attitude affects my rating on my listing and affects my business. There are tons of places that do walk ins, they can go to those places to act that way.
