Prehab Over Rehab: Why It's Smarter to Treat Pain Before It Starts 09/18/2026

Most people come to a massage therapist when something already hurts.

That makes sense; pain is a good motivator. But it also means we're almost always playing catch-up.

There's a smarter approach: prehab over rehab. Catching the tight hip, the restricted shoulder, the asymmetry in how you move, while it's still just a quirk and not yet a problem.

Injuries almost never come out of nowhere. By the time something strains or flares up, there's usually been a warning sign for weeks. Those are exactly the things a good assessment catches, and they're genuinely easy to fix when they're small.

New on the blog: the philosophy behind Massage and Motion, and why prevention is almost always the better investment.

Prehab Over Rehab: Why It's Smarter to Treat Pain Before It Starts Most people come to a massage therapist when something already hurts. That makes sense; pain is a good motivator. But it also means we're almost always playing catch-up. We want to make the case for the opposite approach: prehab over rehab. Rehab is what happens after an injury. It's necessary, it w...

Plantar Fasciitis: Why It's Probably Not What You Think, and What Actually Helps 08/29/2026

If the first few steps you take in the morning send a sharp pain through your heel, you've probably already self-diagnosed plantar fasciitis.

Here's the thing most people don't know: it probably isn't what the name suggests.

"Plantar fasciitis" ends in -itis, meaning inflammation. But when researchers actually look at the tissue, they don't find much inflammation. It's a degenerative issue, not an inflammatory one. That distinction matters because it completely changes how you treat it.

And the heel? That's where you feel it. It's rarely where the problem actually starts.

New on the blog: what plantar pain really is, and what actually helps.

Plantar Fasciitis: Why It's Probably Not What You Think, and What Actually Helps Plantar Fasciitis Recovery: that sharp heel pain in your first morning steps? A sports therapist in Old Saybrook explains what plantar pain really is.

If you've got jaw pain, you already know how much it affects everything else: chewing, sleeping, talking, the headaches that creep up by mid-afternoon.

What a lot of people don't realize is that massage therapy can play a real role in managing it, as long as you understand what it's actually doing.

There's a thing most people miss: TMJ isn't one single problem. It falls into a few different categories, and they aren't all the same thing. Massage therapy is genuinely useful for the most common type, the muscle-related one. For the others, we work alongside a dentist or TMJ specialist rather than pretending we're the fix.

New on the blog: what jaw work actually does, and where its limits are.

What to Expect From Your First Assisted Stretching Session. 06/24/2026

What does an assisted stretching session actually feel like?

Most people have never had one, and the picture in their head is usually some version of an aggressive yoga class. It isn't.

You stay clothed. You stay relaxed. We do the work, moving your limbs and joints through their full range while you don't have to brace or fight anything. That's the difference: because you're not doing the work, your muscles let go in a way they can't when you're stretching yourself.

Runners, golfers, desk workers, anyone who's noticed they just don't move the way they used to. It's not just for athletes.

New on the blog: what really happens in your first session.

Sports massage or deep tissue? Which one do you actually need?
Most people book one or the other based on a guess. They're not the same thing, and picking the right one makes a real difference in what you walk out with.
Deep tissue treats the tissue. Sports massage treats the athlete. One's about the knot in your shoulder. The other's about the fact that you've got a half marathon in six weeks and your right calf keeps tightening up.

We wrote a piece on the real difference, and how to know which one to book. Have a read.

Sports Massage or Deep Tissue? Most people book one or the other based on a guess.
They're not the same thing.

Deep Tissue is about pressure and depth. It works through dense layers of muscle to release the chronic tension that builds up from stress, posture, and years at a desk.

Sports Massage is about how your body moves. It's built around what you're training for, where you're tight, what's at risk of breaking down.
Deep tissue treats the tissue. Sports Massage treats the athlete.

If you're not sure which one to book, that's genuinely fine. Tell us what's going on when you come in and we'll figure it out together.
