We are are the benefits of gua sha?
While records of gua sha usage started emerging in the Ming Dynasty, it is still a commonly used TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) technique today. Practitioners have found it helpful for alleviating pain as well as increasing circulation and energy flow. And while there have been many Chinese studies regarding the efficacy of gua sha, it is only recently that American researchers have begun publishing their own findings. Among those listed above, gua sha also:

Promotes blood circulation✨
From a Chinese medicine perspective, the Tai Yin meridians (composed of the lung and spleen) and Yang Ming meridians (composed of the large intestines and the stomach) are responsible for your skin’s overall health. When you gently scrape the skin on your face with your gua sha tool, what you are doing is stimulating your Yang Ming meridians. You are also sending your body a signal that this area needs more blood circulation.

Promotes lymphatic drainage💫
Gua sha can eliminate fluid build-up, which can in turn reduce puffiness. Since lymph collects superficially under the skin, a deep tissue massage bypasses it (for the most part) in favor of the muscles. A lymphatic drainage massage doesn’t feel particularly intense and that’s on purpose. It’s designed to follow the pathways of the lymph, lymph nodes, and uses a soft touch to assist the body in draining and detoxifying.

Relieves tension from muscles 🌟
Experts note that by applying pressure with a gua sha tool regularly, users can untangle knotted areas and release built-up muscular tension. Gua sha works by engaging tissue to eliminate fluid build-up in the lymph nodes (which can give the illusion of a more contoured face).

The Artist

Travis Johnson is a cross-media artist whose work centers on a whimsical rural black aesthetic that retells his childhood in the harsh landscape of the Mojave Desert. Travis’ story is often told through his rabbit jubilee paintings and wild spirit raven paintings. 

Along with painting, Travis expresses his work through drawing, sculpture, and performance. His cartoon folk aesthetic is a lush visual motif that he continues to explore in his telling of a nu black mythology.
