Per Gov. Inslee’s mandate to all barber shops, I will not be providing services for the next two weeks. I will however be selling pre-paid gift certificates for services when we do reopen, and have plenty of beard oil available as well. PM me for more details. These are weird times, and I hope everyone can remember that we are all in this together. Be safe and kind to each other.

I’ve had a bunch of cancellations, which is understandable, but I wanted to let everyone know that I will be in the shop today and tomorrow and have openings and a good stock of beard oil available. I am taking extra sanitary precautions. If you do show any symptoms, please stay home and take care of yourself. Safely sail on, friends.

One year ago today I did my first haircut as a licensed barber. The Eastside Barber Co. had only one chair setup and I don’t even think we had working lights on the wall yet, just a couple of shop lights on stands. I wasn’t even planning on cutting that day as we had so much still to do with boxes and supplies scattered all over. But even without a barber pole or an open sign, a man came walking through the door asking if I could do a haircut. I sat him down and proceeded to give my first cut in the shop. I still have the first dollar he handed me hanging in my station. A lot has happened over this past year. Reminders that it's rarely a straight line to our goals, the road there twists and winds. So it feels good to look back today and see how much I have accomplished and how far I have traveled. I can’t thank my friends and family enough for their support, either. Without you, I wouldn’t be this far along the path. So thank you all.

Sail on, my friends.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting a Man who was looking for a change. The Man who sat in my chair had hair down to his shoulders and commented that he has never really had a cut that would fall under a particular style. Shave it down. Let it grow out for a year. Rinse and repeat. Some people wear the same style for decades, so it is an honor when you can be the barber that facilitates this life changing transformation. We agreed upon a particular classic looking cut and I proceeded.

With the long locks lying in a heap on the barber shop floor, I styled the hair for the final reveal. I spun the Man around to showcase the new Him. Now, this is the part of my line of work that is the most gratifying. The spin around is almost always met with a smile and some confirmation that my work is appreciated and valued, but the look on this Man’s face was so much more. With a smile a mile wide, He reached his hand out from beneath the cape to shake my hand. He eagerly looked back to the mirror and scooted even closer to admire his metamorphosis. I stood back to admire my work, feeling proud and fulfilled.

I knew very early on in this career change that I had made the right choice, but it is moments like these that continue to reinforce that decision. It strengthens me as a person and as a professional. Being the best part of someone’s day is such a reward, and I feel so thankful to be able to provide that. Not a day has gone by yet that this has felt like work. It’s a passion that pays the bills. I hope that everyone can experience that at some point in their life. Sail on, my friends.
