Life in Nebraska

This of course is not the actual wagon, but when I see it, the memories flow!
Talking about Corn Shucking, this wagon is nearly identical to the one on our farm. At age two, I remember Mom setting me on the front seat next to her as she drove old Pete and Dan, the workhorses. She moved the wagon as Dad pitched the corn he shucked, into it.
That wagon had so many uses, besides the corn harvest. It hauled hay and small livestock, like pigs and grain to the local elevator.
It was the tool in early farm life. My parents were Share Croppers, moving from one farm to another, placing all of their belongings in this tiny wagon.
In the 'dirty thirties' for a living, the crops were barely producing. Dad and Uncle Bill harvested firewood. They split huge logs with a homemade explosive, cut them with a two-man crosscut saw, then split them with an axe and wedge. They stacked the then firewood in the wagon. They delivered to a buyer, stacked it where they wanted it. The pay? One dollar ($1) divided by them or 50 cents for that long, hard day’s work. Oh, a Cord of wood is 4 feet wide, 4 feet high and 8 feet long; the dimensions of the wagon.
