April 23rd St. George Day
George was from 3rd century AD Cappadocia (modern day Turkey).
He is thought to have died in Lydda (modern day Israel) in the Roman province of Palestine in AD 303. It is believed that his tomb was in Lod and was a centre of Christian pilgrimage.
He was an officer in the Roman army.
He encountered persecutions of the Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century, St George was executed for refusing to make a sacrifice in honor of the pagan gods.
Patron saint of soldiers and "all people protecting the nation".
