When you have a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditions, organizations and clubs.
But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike.
This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness.
For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people.
Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface.
Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted!!

Our world would be far less beautiful without them.

Upset post : On the drive to work this morning, I stopped at a gas station I don’t normally visit. I’m 3rd in line to the cash register. At the front, a very well put together mechanic was paying for what looked like will probably be his lunch for the day. Behind him stood this 40ish year old mom and maybe her 10 year old son. I see her look down in disgust at her son then with this snooty grin say “I bet he hasn’t washed that shirt in a month” while she half rolled her eyes.

I was furious with what she said, but somehow didn’t say anything.

I watched this man walk out with one of the most prominent names in heavy equipment on his chest that he’s a field mechanic with. He gets up in his 2022 half a million dollar service truck.

The point of this story is i watched this lady get into her 2012 Kia look down on a man that probably makes three times what myself and her income put together makes.
Instead of teaching this child that a trade is as important and prestigious as her crappy desk job now has this child looking down on someone that has made a great life for him and his family.

Don’t look at a grease spot on someone’s shirt as less than.

Teach your children that trades are as important as a degree. That is all 🙂 Not everyone can afford a college degree and most trades make a good living and support their family with a good life.

Well I finally retired and the shop is closed. My poor old back could just not take the standing anymore. I will miss all my clients who have become friends over the years. Thank you to all who were loyal clients over the years.

As of the last day of January I will finally be retired from doing hair. I appreciate all of your patronage and support throughout the years and will miss everyone but my back will not hold out any longer. Will still do my oldest clients at their house for now. Thank you all so very much.
