There isn’t one magical birthday where everything suddenly changes.

Our skin just gradually becomes a little less efficient at doing some of the things it used to do really well.

Take cell turnover.

You’ve probably heard that your skin “renews itself every 28 days.” Kind of. Our skin doesn’t actually run on a perfect 28 day schedule.

New skin cells are created deeper in the epidermis, mature, make their way toward the surface and eventually shed. When we’re younger, that process tends to happen more efficiently. As we age, it gradually slows down.

And you can see it.

Skin may look duller. Texture becomes more noticeable. And that random brown spot from the beach somehow decides it lives there now. 😂

So naturally we think, I need to exfoliate more.

Sometimes! But here’s the interesting part.

Exfoliation removes cells that have already made their way to the surface. Cellular renewal begins much deeper in the skin. So while exfoliation can help skin look smoother and brighter, doing MORE isn’t necessarily going to make your skin behave younger. Overdoing it can actually compromise your barrier and leave skin irritated and dehydrated.

There’s also a whole other aging process happening underneath the surface.

Our fibroblasts are the little worker cells responsible for making things like collagen. As we age, collagen production decreases and existing collagen becomes more fragmented.

Then add years of UV exposure into the mix. ☀️

Those beach days, car rides, sitting by windows and “I’m only outside for a minute” days add up. UV damage contributes to collagen breakdown, uneven pigment, fine lines and texture changes.

So I look at anti aging skincare a little differently.

It’s not about trying to make your skin “young” again.

It’s about understanding what your skin isn’t doing quite as efficiently anymore and giving it a little help.

Protect the collagen you have. Encourage healthy cell turnover. Stimulate new collagen when appropriate. Support your barrier. Correct pigment. Wear the dang SPF. 😂

Your skin is still incredibly capable of change as you age.

We just have to know what it needs help doing now. 🤍
