The flu and bursts of the Christmas spirit. Also, happy hannukah merry Yule.

Celebrating the holiday season in a rebellious way. Miele got real sick (got the flu with fever) so we had to cancel our trip to Naples to visit one of my most favorite people which made me so sad. We had planned the trip for months. Im always learning when plans change- loss of control is a great teacher and I’m a stubborn pupil. When I realized the best move was to cancel I immediately jumped into the mode of planning for when Miele got better so that her holiday wasn’t ruined but then of course we can’t predict whether we will get sick too! Oh the uncertainty! How our bodies demand our attention! So I’ve been trying to think of activities that are more organically infused with meaning, creativity, and nourishment- that aren’t too difficult for a sick family to do. Turns out there’s a million and maybe they aren’t soooo far from the consumer-driven traditions of these holidays. Maybe these holidays aren’t so “sick” and “over the top” after all? My typical rebellious mind defaults to this thinking. So I’m still feeling rebellious in that I’m being forced to resist the SPEED and mayhem that can sometimes be Christmas - the pressure to make it right! Memorable! Picture worthy! Sensational! - but I’m really probably doing most of it the same, just more slowly and having the time, while snuggling my daughter on the couch, to reflect on what exactly is the meaning of these activities we choose to engage in: cookie making, present giving, candle lighting? I’ll try to post more about what I come up with later. For now I’m embodying my nonchalant cat from the couch while smooching my daughter too much, drinking too much tea, watching too much TV. This is me at 40- I’m gonna try to post a thing here and there again and participate in instagram in a creative way. I’m so resistant to it because of how saturated we all are with information- and the consumption-dopamine- feed -me-feed-me-feed-me-I’m a hungry ghost——cycle it can perpetuate—— but I think there might be ways to approach it nourishingly and slowly, in small doses. So cheers to my effort of giving instagram 15 minutes of my time each week instead of zero or 100. See you again soon!
