Thank you, , for the invitation to speak to your Healthcare Sales Careers class at my Alma mater, . We discussed what qualities make a great orthopedic sales representative from an orthopedic surgeon’s perspective: honesty, brevity, integrity, and the ability to stay cool in high-pressure situations.

Orthopedic sales reps are an integral part of my team in the operating room, and trust is earned through consistency. Even if you are just getting started in your career as a sales representative, hard work and a desire to learn go a long way in a surgeon’s eyes.

What a fun class to be a part of. Thanks again, Kevin! Go Redhawks!

📝 New Publication Alert 🦵✨

Our latest study on patella baja following revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) is now published!

🔍 Key findings:
• True patella baja occurred in 24% of cases
• Pseudo–patella baja occurred in 14%
• Revision for infection increased the risk of true patella baja nearly 9x
• Number of prior surgeries and preoperative patella position were strong predictors of outcomes
• Patients with normal patellar height had improved range of motion compared to those with patella baja

📊 These findings highlight the importance of recognizing risk factors such as prior surgeries, infection, and pre-op patellar height to improve outcomes after revision TKA.

Nice work, .gapinski !

Why do surgeons care so much about your body weight before you have hip or knee replacement surgery? It’s because we care about you!

Please give our new AAHKS Amplified podcast a listen to learn more about how surgeons optimize the patients from a medical standpoint prior to surgery, and why it matters. (Link in bio)

Congratulations to our fellow, Adam Miller, MD, who completed his fellowship with us in Adult Reconstruction. During his year here, Adam did 1085 cases (and 241 of those were revisions!). Adam is heading back home to Louisville, KY to start his practice. Adam, we know you will make us proud and will take the best care of your patients. Cheers!

We’ve reached 1,000 Google Reviews!

As surgeons, we try not to get too focused on online patient reviews (plenty of other things we should focus on first). But knowing that I have helped this many patients in my first four years of practice reminds me of why I chose this profession.

Thank you to my team (Daniel, Yaara, Sarah, Val), who are likely the real reason we get so many 5-star reviews.

Most importantly, thank you to all my patients who trusted me with their care. It is an honor to be your surgeon.

Our new publication in BJJ was a fun one to do! We had two adult reconstruction surgeons and two traumatologists review X-rays and CT scans of 24 periprosthetic proximal femur fractures. Our goal was to predict which stems were well-fixed and which were loose (Vancouver B1 vs B2).

As an adult reconstruction surgeon, I was very excited to show my knowledge of stem design (which in my mind would help me predict which stems were loose.) Boy, was I wrong ha. This was very tough to predict based on imaging alone, and sometimes the CT scan made it more confusing.

We found that using both radiographs and CT scans were unreliable in our ability to predict which stems were loose. The only reliable way to discern between loose and well-fixed was to check the stem fixation intra-operatively. On top of that, we found no difference in the accuracy of our predictions whether the surgeon was trained in adult reconstruction or not. Interesting!

So, will you all keep getting CT scans of your periprosthetic proximal femur fracture?

New publication! As a sister study to our previous study looking at surgeon posture during revision TJA, this time we examined surgeon posture between conventional TKA and robotic-assisted TKA. We compared 48 robotic cases and 55 conventional total knee cases amongst 3 surgeons, and found a decrease in the percentage and duration
of time spent slouching in robotic cases compared to conventional cases (42.4 vs. 72.5%, p < 0.001, 35.4 vs. 54.7 min, p = 0.037).

Nice job, Zach Gapinski and team!
