Have you ever called a salon to ask if they have a stylist that cuts curly hair?
And 9 times out of ten the answers is “YES, so and so cuts curly hair!”
Only to show up, sit down, just to have the stylist tell you they will have to straighten your hair to cut it...
Or layers don’t look good on curly hair...
Or bangs aren’t a good idea for curly hair...
Or some other craziness!
Let me share a little “not-so-secret” secret with you all, cosmetology school doesn’t really teach us how to work with curly hair!
To become a Curl specialist continuing educations is what it takes to specialize that makes the difference!
And shifting the mind set to really think about how our current hair practices affect the long term health of curly hair and how we can improve them.
Improving doesn’t always mean complete change most times it’s small adjustments that make a HUGE difference in the outcome!
Healthy hair and coloring your curls...
At some point during most new guest appointment I get ask what are my thoughts on coloring curly hair.
My answer is always the same.
“As long as the curls are healthy there is nothing wrong with coloring your hair.”
But 2 things I highly recommend:
🌀get the color done professionally and make sure the stylist understands how color affects curl integrity.
🌀make sure you have a good at home care routine, because the hair will be more susceptible to dryness and breakage, even if the color is done correctly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Color can be a fun addition to change your look but the health of your curls should always be your number 1 concern during any color service.
This is why color services are a specialty service to existing guest at Pure Avidity Salon.
The priority is always healthy hair, because healthy hair is beautiful hair!

Every year I make personal goal for myself.
This year one of my goal was to stay inspired by taking classed to grow my education in my craft/career.
This year I celebrate 15 years as a licensed cosmetologist and 10 years as curl specialist.
Learning new techniques and networking with other amazing hairstylist has been a great way to remind me why I love what I do!
So yesterday I attend my 4th class of 2026!
Why are second curly cuts visits are just as important as the 1st salon visit.
At Pure Avidity Salon 1st time guest appointments are filled with education, tips, new techniques and recommendations on how to make their routine better.
BUT second appointments are all about what the guest needs!
Do they want to review the education/styling lesson from the first visit? Sometimes it’s helpful to see the new technique in full again to help refine the process a little more.
Do they want more product recommendations to help them adjust their at home styling needs? Some times they want a product with a little more hold or a simpler styling routine.
Do they just want to relax and enjoy the process of letting someone else take over wash day duties? Who doesn’t love having their hair done for them!
Or do they want all 3? Cause we can do it all, if they want!
I always enjoy second salon visits because I can see how well my guest is doing with their at home routine and there is almost always a big difference in the health of their curls!
Can you see the different in this guest’s curls from her 1st and 2nd visit?
These curls always attract a crowd!
I’m pretty sure they have their own secret fan club!
And I’m okay with it!
Learning to love my curls has been a life long journey of loving myself.
Everywhere I go people always have questions.
Some fairly normal ones, like the ones in this post, and some that really bother me, like the always unwanted “can I touch your hair?”
I always welcome questions about my curls because often time how I navigate this world with my big curly hair can be helpful or inspiring to others with curls!
Questions are how we normalizing our curly hair and our shared curly hair experience.
Are you ready to commit to one year to see what’s possible when your curls can thrive?
This commitment is not about making your routine more difficult, in fact for most it’s less work!
This commitment will require patience, consistency of a simple routine, and regular salon maintenance.
For this guest that commitment meant:
🌀Changing her products to help with health of her hair. Just a simple regiment of a good shampoo, conditioner, one styling product and one product to help with refreshing her curls.
🌀Pulling back on washing too often cause it was drying out her curls causing her hair to be dehydrated leading to breakage.
🌀Adjusting the techniques she used for conditioning and styling to ensure her hair was being hydrated and styling of longevity!
🌀Getting a curly haircuts every 4 months. (The after picture was her 4th curly haircut.)
Even though her curls needed lots of love at her 1st visit, a big chop was never discussed because this guest LOVES her long hair.
That’s where patience comes, and it paid off cause her curls are stunning!
One year can change everything!
Just in case you need a reminder that your curly hair is already elegant!
And your curls are perfect for every occasion!
Your curls are an amazing accent to any formal look!
Would you wear your natural curls in an updo for your next big event?
Good news! I can help!
Helping people find a routine to make caring for their curls at home easier is my speciality.
I achieve this by educating guest about their hair, and styling options that work best for them.
Curls are just as unique as the person they’re attached too.
So that rabbit hole you’ve been down time and time again may not be helping with your individual curls.
Your curls might respond to a technique or product a little differently than that person on the video.
And that’s okay!
If your ready to end the cycle of frustration come visit me at Pure Avidity Salon.
I’m ready to help you!
